PARBICA Conferences
Every two years PARBICA holds a conference. The next PARBICA conference will be held in Wellington, New Zealand from 7 to 8 November 2025.
These conferences provide a unique opportunity to make or renew professional contacts with other archivists working in the Pacific region. Conference delegates discuss common problems and explore possible solutions in small groups and plenary sessions. The conferences include workshop sessions aimed at building the technical and professional knowledge of our members.
The conferences include the formal PARBICA General Conference where decisions are made about PARBICA’s strategic activities and policies and where the Bureau is elected.
PARBICA 21 – Demystifying Digital
Wellington, 7-8 Nov 2025
This year, we come together to challenge the perception that the digital world is an impossible challenge for Pacific recordkeeping practitioners. “Demystifying Digital” is about breaking down barriers, making technology understandable, and sharing practical, accessible solutions tailored to the realities of our region, while also looking ahead to see what opportunities are on the horizon.
This theme reflects our shared commitment to empower Pacific archives, cultural institutions, and information professionals to engage confidently with digital tools, regardless of resources or infrastructure.
Through presentations, workshops, talanoa sessions, and regional case studies, PARBICA 21 will explore:
- How to start digital projects in low-resource environments
- Simple, practical tools for digitisation, description, and access
- Building the case for funding and support
- Community engagement and advocacy for documentary heritage
- Indigenous-led approaches to digital memory, sovereignty, and sustainability
This is also an opportunity to make/renew lasting connections with practitioners from a broad range of situations and experiences. From large and advanced organisations with cutting edge set ups, to smaller operations working with very little and still making things work.

International Archives Week
International Archives Week is celebrated in June. Activities are organised by members from across the region and the wider ICA to promote archives and the archives profession.
ICA Events
Every year ICA organises at least one major governance and professional programme event. This meeting is always the high point in ICA’s calendar and includes the General Assembly, the Executive Board and Programme Commission meetings, and Branches and Sections also hold joint meetings, AGMs and Steering Committee meetings at this time.
Three years out of four, ICA holds the Annual Conference, with a programme of lectures, panel debates, workshops and discussions around current professional challenges and issues.
Every four years ICA holds the International Council on Archives Congress. This year the conference will be in Barcelona, Spain, 27-30 October 2025
